Buying gold jewellery online: which jeweller websites?
Branded jeweller websites are the most direct way to buy wearable gold online. Hallmarked gold jewellery sold in India must carry the BIS logo, purity mark and a 6-digit HUID; insist on it. Here is what each brand's own site states.
Jeweller | What its site states | Check before buying |
Tanishq (tanishq.co.in) | Gold coins from 1 g to 50 g; Gold Exchange programme; Digital Gold and Golden Harvest under "Investments" | Return and delivery terms on the help pages |
CaratLane (caratlane.com) | 15-day returns; free shipping; Gold Exchange; Buy Digital Gold. Its blog says exchange is typically at 100% of gold value, excluding making | Exact exchange terms in writing |
BlueStone (bluestone.com) | 30-day free returns; lifetime exchange and buyback; BIS hallmark; 24 Kt (995) coins from 0.05 g and 22 Kt (916) coins from 1 g | Buyback deduction, if any |
Candere (candere.com) | "Online partner of Kalyan Group" and Kalyan's official e-commerce store; 15-day returns; lifetime exchange; free delivery | Certification on each listing |
Malabar Gold & Diamonds | Runs an online store (launched as shopmgd.com in October 2013); a May 2014 company release listed a 14-day refund and free one-year insurance | Current refund and insurance terms; these may have changed |
Joyalukkas (joyalukkas.in) | Indian website exists; we could not verify its online policies | Delivery, return and exchange terms directly |
Kalyan Jewellers' site also warns about a fake "Kalyan Gold Store" sending links such as kgs01.in. Type the brand's web address yourself rather than clicking message links. For a wider comparison, see [Which Jewellery Shop Is Best?] and [Where Can I Buy Real Gold Jewelry Online?].
Buying gold coins and bars online
Coins are the simplest way to own physical 24K gold online. Moneyview puts coin making charges at about 1–3%. Jewellery making charges usually run from about 3% to 25%. Both carry 3% GST.
Jeweller sites: Tanishq, BlueStone, Malabar and others sell hallmarked coins.
Mint-brand coins on marketplaces: Amazon and Flipkart list coins and bars. Buy from the brand's own store page, not an unknown reseller.
Banks: RBI allowed designated banks to sell MMTC's India Gold Coins in 2016, in 5 g and 10 g sizes. BankBazaar lists ICICI, HDFC and Axis Bank as selling coins online. Moneylife notes that banks are not permitted to buy coins back, so you must sell them to a jeweller.
On 26 Oct 2026, 24K gold was ₹14,275 per gram (Groww, India average). A 10 g coin at a 3% premium plus 3% GST would cost about ₹1,51,443. City rates differ slightly.
Buying digital gold online: is it safe?
Digital gold lets you buy 24K gold in tiny amounts, from ₹1, in apps you already use. A provider buys and stores the physical gold in a vault in your name.
Google Pay launched gold buying with MMTC-PAMP in 2019, selling 24K gold of 99.99% purity.
Paytm says its gold is backed by MMTC-PAMP and stored in insured vaults with trustee oversight.
PhonePe says gold is held by its partner providers in insured vaults with zero storage fees, and that its own role is limited to payment facilitation. Coin conversion needs at least 0.5 g.
Providers: MMTC-PAMP, SafeGold and Augmont supply most apps, per Sahi's 2026 guide.
The regulatory catch. On 8 November 2025, SEBI cautioned investors that digital gold products sold by online platforms fall outside its regulatory purview. They are not securities or regulated commodity derivatives, so securities-market investor protection does not apply. SEBI pointed to Gold ETFs, Electronic Gold Receipts and exchange-traded commodity derivatives as regulated routes. As of Outlook Money's 28 Sep 2026 report, a digital gold framework was still only proposed.
Costs add up too: 3% GST on purchase and a buy-sell spread that Sahi puts at 2.5–5%. Use digital gold for small savings you may convert to coins or jewellery, not as your main gold holding.
Buying gold ETFs and gold mutual funds online
Gold ETFs are the regulated way to buy gold online purely as an investment. They are SEBI-regulated funds that hold physical gold and trade on NSE and BSE.
How: open a demat and trading account, then buy ETF units like shares. Sahi notes one unit usually represents about 0.01 g of gold.
Costs: no GST on purchase; an expense ratio of roughly 0.5–0.9% a year, plus brokerage.
No demat? Gold Fund of Funds invest in ETFs and accept SIPs; Moneyview lists SIPs from ₹500.
You cannot wear an ETF, and converting it to a coin means selling and buying again.
Can you still buy Sovereign Gold Bonds online?
Not from the RBI. The government has not issued a new SGB tranche since February 2024, per GoldenPi's May 2026 report and Sahi's 2026 guide. No issuance calendar has been announced for FY 2026–27.
You can still buy existing SGB series on NSE or BSE through a demat account. They pay 2.5% annual interest on the issue price. From 1 April 2026, the tax-free treatment at maturity applies only to original subscribers who hold to maturity, so secondary-market buyers pay capital gains tax. Trading in many series is thin, so check the price against the gold rate before you buy.
How much gold does ₹1 lakh buy by each route?
This illustration uses Groww's 26 Oct 2026 rates (24K ₹14,275/g, 22K ₹13,085/g) and the cost assumptions shown.
Route | Assumption | Gold you get for ₹1,00,000 |
Gold ETF | No GST; ignores brokerage | ≈ 7.0 g of 24K exposure |
Digital gold | 3% GST | ≈ 6.80 g of 24K |
24K coin | 3% premium + 3% GST | ≈ 6.60 g of 24K |
22K jewellery | 10% making + 3% GST | ≈ 6.75 g of 22K (≈ 6.18 g pure gold) |
Jewellery gives the least pure gold per rupee, but it is the only option you can wear. If resale value matters, read [How Much Making Charges for Gold in India?] before buying.
Safety checklist before you buy gold online
Type the official URL. Avoid links in WhatsApp or SMS messages.
Check the hallmark. Hallmarked jewellery shows the BIS logo, purity (22K916, 18K750) and a 6-digit HUID.
Verify the HUID. Enter it in the BIS CARE app under "Verify HUID" once the piece arrives.
Read the price breakup. Net gold weight, rate per gram, making, stones and 3% GST should be listed separately.
Compare the gold value with today's rate. A price far below the rate implies is a red flag.
Read the return and exchange policy. Note the number of days and any deduction on exchange or buyback.
Insist on insured, tracked delivery. Record a video while opening the parcel.
Pay by a traceable method. Card, UPI or net banking leaves a record; keep the GST invoice.
For digital gold, read the provider terms. Note the vault custodian, storage fees after the free period, and the delivery charge for coins.
For ETFs and SGBs, use a SEBI-registered broker. Check the expense ratio or market price before buying.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the safest place to buy gold online in India?
For jewellery and coins, buy from a branded jeweller's own website and verify the HUID in the BIS CARE app. For investment, SEBI-regulated gold ETFs and gold mutual funds offer regulatory protection that digital gold apps do not.
Is digital gold regulated in India?
No. On 8 November 2025, SEBI said digital gold sold by online platforms falls outside its regulatory purview. A framework was still under discussion as of September 2026.
Can I buy Sovereign Gold Bonds in 2026?
Not as a new issue; the last primary tranche was in February 2024. You can buy existing series on NSE or BSE through a demat account.
Is it safe to buy gold jewellery online?
It is safe from established jewellers if the piece is hallmarked with a 6-digit HUID, comes with an itemised invoice and ships insured. Check the HUID in the BIS CARE app on delivery.
Which app is best for buying digital gold?
Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm all sell digital gold through providers such as MMTC-PAMP and SafeGold. Compare the buy-sell spread, storage terms and coin delivery charges, not the app brand.
Do I pay GST when buying gold online?
Yes, 3% GST applies to gold jewellery, coins and digital gold purchases. Gold ETFs and SGBs do not attract GST on purchase.
Can I buy gold coins online from banks?
Some designated banks sell gold coins, including MMTC's India Gold Coins. Banks do not buy coins back, so you will sell them to a jeweller later.
